CIRCUITO NACIONAL DE SURF MOVES TO PLAYA HERMOSA THIS SATURDAY, SUNDAY/ JANUARY 7-8 THIRD DATE OF COSTA RICA'S SURF COMPETITION TO KICK-OFF CONTEST WITHIN A CONTEST COPA MANGO

Playa Hermosa, COSTA RICA January 2, 2006 Antonio Pilurzu, head of Costa Rica's Federacion de Surf (FS) , announced today that the third date of the 2005-06 Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS) will take place this weekend, January 7 and 8 at Puntarenas Playa Hermosa. Called Copa Mango, the tournament is the first of three dates sponsored by the Costa Rican chain Mango Skate & Surf Shop, and begins each day on the beach in front of The Backyard at 6 a.m. For this 3-star contest, inscriptions will take place Friday, January 6, between 5 and 7 p.m., at the Mango Surf Shop in Jaco. (The price is c6000 for this date only, with c6000 to register for the entire year if you did not pay the annual fee at a previous contest.)

For the 6th edition of the CNS, the FS have included the Copa Mango tournament; it is composed of three Circuito dates, including this first one in Playa Hermosa, followed February 11 and 13 in Playa Dominical and finishing the trifecta March 4 and 5 in Playa Nosara.

Together with adding the results to the general points of CNS contest, we will make a separate ranking for the results of the three dates of the Copa, explained Pilurzu of the contest-within-a-contest. We have made all this effort and organized this form as an extra incentive to the new generation of surfers to assure even more champions, including a winner for the Copa Mango.

Meanwhile, at the top of the CNS moving into the Copa Mango, there's a mere difference of 15 points between the top two Open category contenders. After contests in Playa Avellanas and Tamarindo, Isaac Vega, who lives in Tamarindo, is currently ranked #1 with 2450 points, and in the #2 position is Durby Castillo from Playa Pavones with 2435 points.

Durby and me, we both want to win, but I realize that if I desire to go far, it will be necessary to give maximum effort because this year the level of my rivals is raised so much. Now, it is only a matter of waiting for good waves because it will be in the water where all the results will be defined, indicated Vega, while training for the Hermosa date.

Castillo affirmed: This season, I have paid attention to what I need to do to be the champion. I am happy with my good start, and I am hoping that in Playa Hermosa I will be able to stay in the fight to advance as much as I can.

During the event this weekend, the 1st place winners in each of the 11 categories will receive 1000 points.

Three representatives of Rancho Coral Surf Camp in Playa Esterillos near the town of Parrita are in absolute control of Boys, Grommets and Mini-Grommets categories of the CNS as the tournament moves to Hermosa. During the first two journeys in Playa Avellanas and Tamarindo, Albert Muñoz, finished 1st place in Mini-Grommets, while his brother Carlos Muñoz took first place in Grommets. Then in Tamarindo, Carlos was victorious in Boys as well, the category that Danny Bishko also from Rancho Coral had topped in Avellanas.

We are a group of friends that start surfing together 4 years ago. In this Hermosa tournament, we want to put Parrita's name on top again, said Bishko.

Saturday evening there will be a Mango Surf Party for the surf competitors and their guests at Jungle in Central Jaco, beginning at 9 p.m.

The international sponsors for Copa Mango are Red Bull, Quiksilver, Roxy, Billabong, and Freestyle. Costa Rica's sponsors are: Mango Surf & Skate, Tamarindo Vista Villas, Cala Luna Hotel & Villas, Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort & Residential Community, The Backyard, Chuck's W.O.W.
